Contact Improvisation
Performance – Flow and dynamics in contact improvisation
Contact improvisation – a postmodern, contemporary dance form that combines mindfulness, technique, and play. You learn to feel and perceive your body – through touch, we listen to each other: in which direction are we moving, how intense is the touch, in which dynamics are we moving, who is leading and who is following – we work with the material of gravity, “weight,” and different qualities for taking and giving weight – we dance without a prescribed sequence of steps - we roll in the lower plane of space and over each other in higher planes of space - we fall softly through the planes of space to the floor.
The practice is based on elements from Body-Mind Centering, Skinner Release, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Aikido, acrobatics, and meditation. This results in a flowing, dynamic quality of movement—in solo, duo, or group improvisation.
At the end of the semester, you can—if you want—show what you have learned at the dance finale evening.
