Originating in the "dance halls" in Jamaica in the 1970s, dancehall represents a music, a dance, but also fashion and a sense of community. Dancers were strongly influenced by their African roots, musicians by the popularity of reggae and the Patois/Patwa language. For me, dancehall carries a very special energy: sassy/cheeky, self-confident, playful and infectious. And I would like to share this with you in the form of a little choreography, a bit of music appreciation and a little history session!
